She was ill just a few days tho' she had been in failing health for some time. Her children were at her bedside - Mrs. Alice Lamme, wife of F. Julian Lamme, of Walsenburg, and Ted Hixson who has a fine farm - the King's place- at Valmont. Her grandson, Carl K. Hixson, was also with her. She was a descendant of Oliver Wolcott, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She came to Boulder in 1871 with her parents. She is also survived by son Howard H. Hixson of Seattle and 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The home of the Hixsons is one of the oldest in Boulder and is surrounded by some of the finest trees in the city. Mrs. Hixson had lived quietly there with her grandson Carl, an employee of the City Plumbing & Heating Company. She was held in high regard by all who knew her.' (BDC 14 Jan 1928)
Eveline's obituary has the following about her husband Luther. 'When not yet 18 years of age, in July 1861, he volunteered his services, joining Company G, 51st Ohio Infantry. As that company was not accepted, as the state's quota had been filled, he enlisted at Camp Meigs, OH. Later he saw action in the Battle of Shiloh and was wounded in the engagement of Stone River. Upon his recovery, he re-enlisted at Chickamauga, he was wounded by a spent ball which he carried thruout the battle. Among the famous battles in which he particpiated were Lookout Mountain Missionary Ridge, Tunnel Hill, Dalton, Kenesaw Mountain, Seige of Atlantic. In Dec 1865 he was mustered out of service as first duty-sergeant. After spending a few weeks at home he started for the west, settling in Jefferson, Iowa, then in Nebraska and in 1867 in Montana. Nov 1, 1870 he started for Colorado by team and was on his way to Caribou, then the scene of a great mining boom, when he arrived in Boulder. He was so impressed with the city that he decided to remain.'
