Birth: Aug. 5, 1938
Death: Nov. 18, 2013

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Alice Viola Miles Barbee, born August 5, 1938, a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother as well as a talented dancer, musician, teacher and community volunteer died November 18, 2013 at the age of 75 in Augusta, GA. Alice was born in Atlanta, GA while her father was attending Atlanta-Southern Dental School and grew up in Augusta, GA except for the two years she spent in Baltimore, MD during high school while her father served in the Army during the Korean War. Her family returned to Augusta in time for her to graduate from Richmond Academy with honors. She then attended the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. She received the Lillian Powell Bonney Scholarship for outstanding talent in Ballet and was first soloist with the Peabody Ballet Co. She also studied at Jacob's Pillow in Massachusetts and studied in New York with the School of American Ballet, performing in such productions as Swan Lake under the artistic direction of George Balanchine. Choosing to complete college rather than pursue a professional career in ballet, she subsequently matriculated to Florida State University where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, serving one year as Rush Chair. She graduated from FSU with a degree in music and a specialization in music therapy. While at FSU, she met Richard Russell Barbee of Jacksonville, FL. They were married at First Baptist Church in Augusta. After their daughter was born, Alice and Richard set off to Atlanta where he attended the Emory University School of Dentistry, and Alice taught at the Fairhaven School, which at the time was a school for mentally challenged children. She returned to Augusta with her family in 1966. She was a member of the Augusta Country Club, past member of the Pinnacle Club, the Augusta Symphony Guild, the Augusta Dental Auxiliary, Vice Chairman of the United Way Residential Division Campaign, and past President of the Bransford Road Garden Club, the ADPi Alumnae Club, and the Augusta Ballet Parents Association. She was an avid tennis player. She taught Sunday school for the youth at Hill Baptist Church for 15 years. She was a pianist at First Presbyterian Church for 10 years. She taught private piano lessons in her home for 33 years. During those years she was an active member of the Augusta Music Teachers' Association and President of that organization twice. She taught 300 children and youth and dozens of adults. She loved her students and being able to strengthen both their minds and hearts as well as to give them a productive pastime they could take into or enjoy during adulthood. She is preceded in death by her father Peter Steven Miles, D.D.S., her mother Juanita Ulmer Miles and her husband, Richard Russell Barbee, D.D.S. who suffered from Pick's Disease for the last 15 years of his life and for whom she courageously cared during his illness. She left behind her only child and daughter, Anita Barbee-Cunningham, Ph.D., her son-in-law Michael Robert Cunningham, Ph.D. of Louisville, KY, two grandsons, Robert Michael Richard Cunningham of Cambridge, MA and Benjamin Miles Hillbrook Cunningham of Charlottesville, VA, a sister, Joy Miles Smith Wallin, a former brother-in-law Harry D. Smith, Jr., a nephew Justin Smith- all of Houston, TX and a niece, Allison Smith Bellomy, her husband David Bellomy and their four children, Jackson, Lauren, Peter and Megan of Siloam Springs, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given in Alice's memory to the Augusta Alzheimer's Association Judson C. Hickey Day Care Center, 1901 Central Avenue, Augusta, GA 30904. Many thanks to Barbara Hall and all of the staff at Barbara Hall's Personal Care Home. Just as they lovingly cared for Richard in his last years, they similarly cared for Alice in her final weeks. A private family graveside service was held November 21, 2013 at Westover Memorial Park with Dr. J. Andrew Menger of the Church of the Good Shepherd and Platt's Funeral Home officiating. A celebration of Alice's life will take place January 4, 2014 from 3:00-5:00 at the Wallace House, Augusta Country Club, 655 Milledge Rd. in Augusta, Georgia.
