Ellendale, N.D. - Vernon J. Middlestead, 56, of Ellendale, N.D., formerly of Aberdeen, son of Emil and Viola (Eberhart) Middlestead was born Jan. 7, 1949, in Ellendale, N.D. He was raised on a farm near Fullerton, N.D., and attended school in Fullerton. In 1967 Vernon entered the U S Army. He served in Vietnam from 1969-70 and remained on active reserve until 1973 when he was honorably discharged. On Nov. 7, 1970, Vernon married Charlette Batsch in Kulm, N.D. They made their home in Jamestown, N.D., until 1992 when they moved to Aberdeen, S.D. Vernon worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad from 1972 until his retirement in 2002. He was a part-time consultant for the South Dakota DOT from 2003 until his death. Vernon was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church and the VFW Post #760. He served on the board of Pheasant Lake Association. Vernon enjoyed fishing and hunting with his boys. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Vernon died Dec. 29, 2005, at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo after a courageous battle with cancer. Grateful to have shared in his life are wife: Charlette Middlestead, Ellendale, N.D.; two sons: Jeramie Middlestead, Ellendale, N.D. and Andrew Middlestead, Jamestown, N.D.; mother: Viola Middlestead, Ellendale, N.D.; two brothers: Edwin (Kay) Middlestead, West Fargo, N.D. and Dale (Becky) Middlestead, Ellendale, N.D.; one sister: Betty (Reuben) Neis, Ellendale, N.D.; father and mother-in-law: Ray & June Batsch, Jamestown, N.D.; brothers and sisters-in-law: Bruce & Ruth Batsch, Valley City, N.D., Tom & Gale Scherbenske and Denny & LaRay Waltz, Jamestown, N.D.; eight nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; sister: Bonnie Johnson; brothers-in-law: Paul Johnson and Randy Batsch. The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Abundant Life Assembly of God in Ellendale with Pastors Galen Sylvester and John Brady officiating. Visitation is 1-7 p.m. at Hoven Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Burial is at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Jamestown, N.D. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given to American Cancer Society.
