Nikiski resident, Mr. Benjamin Joseph Michaels, 71, died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna.
Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 20th, 2013 at The Nikiski Senior Center off of Island Lake Road.
Mr. Michaels was born August 24, 1941 in San Diego, California. He graduated from San Diego High School and furthered his education by receiving a degree in Structural Engineering from the University of San Diego. Ben served in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp. before being honorably discharged. In May of 1990 he moved to Nikiski, where he has resided for over 20 years. In 1980 Ben worked in Channelview, TX at Branham Industries, from 1980 to 1983 he formed for B.M.C. in Corpus Christi, TX; in 1983 he worked inNobara, Guatuja, Brazil. From 1986 to 1988 he worked for Weld-Met/ Lab in Houston, TX; from 1988 to 1989 Ben worked for ANJ ENG, CO in Brisbane, Australia; from 1990 to 2003 he worked for NATCHQ in Nikiski, AK; from 2004 to 2006 he worked at TEAM in Kenai and later in 2006 he worked in Los Angeles at Con Am for a little while. In 2007 he worked in Houston and Prudhoe Bay, AK for 1 year until finally working for ASRC in Nikiski where he then retired.
Ben enjoyed road trips on his Harley, camping with his family, and speaking fluent Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Latin.
The family wrote, "Who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent man and the love of his children. Who had filled his niche and accomplished his task, who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty, or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had."
He was preceded in death by his mother, Clair Hemphil.
He is survived by his wife, Shellie Michaels of Nikiski; daughters, Angie Young of Colmesneil, TX, Krystle Michaels of Nikiski and Sevin-Re' Michaels of Nikiski; son, Benjamin Michaels, Jr. of Lake Tahoe, CA; sister, Barbara Hemphil of San Diego California and brother, Jim Hemphil of San Diego, California; grandsons, Forest Young of Kenai and Henry Young of Kenai; granddaughter, Shelby Dotson of Nikiski.
