METZNER, Robert Joseph
Lt. Commander
Bob Metzner went to be with his Lord on Jan. 25, 2010. The Palmdale resident was a rocket engineer for Rockwell Internationals Rocketdyne Division, which later was part of Boeing North America. He was a test engineer who developed fuel efficiency for all of the Apollo projects, including the moon landing. He retired from Boeing on Oct. 30, 1998, after 35 years of service. The Wheeling, West Virginia, native was a former resident of Long Beach, Anaheim and Lancaster, and was proud to be a part of the growth of Palmdale, where he lived for 30 years. He graduated in 1952, from Linsly Military Institute in Wheeling; and from Penn State University in 1957, with a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. He was a proud supporter and donor for each alma mater. After college, he went to a Navy officer training course in Newport, Rhode Island and was stationed at Long Beach before he was hired at Rocketdyne on Oct. 14, 1963. He retired from the Navy Reserves as lieutenant commander. He died Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, after a two-day stay at Antelope Valley Hospital in Palmdale, where he had a severe stroke. He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Gertrude (Baumann) Metzner, and his father, Robert Brakmann Metzner, of Wheeling, West Virginia. He is survived by his sister, Sara J. Guentz, of Long Beach, Calif.; and his brother, William "Bill" Raymond Metzner, Sr., of Wheeling, West Virginia; a niece, Janet Lynn Metzner of Elkridge, Md., and husband Matthew John McAtee; three nephews: William R. Metzner, Jr., and wife Tanua Brennan Metzner, of Martins Ferry, Ohio; Steve E. Guentz and wife, Sabrina Aris, of Long Beach, and Chuck E. Guentz and wife, Tara, of Clovis, Calif. He is also survived by a great-niece, Gabriella Adeline Guentz; four great-nephews: 2Lt. Justin Paul Messenger of Fort Hood, Texas; Samuel Joseph Metzner of Martins Ferry; and Braden Charles and Brody Dean Guentz of Clovis. He is also survived by a step-great nephew, Liam McAtee of Elkridge. Patricia Dawn of Palmdale, and Nelda Bohannon, also of Palmdale, are his treasured friends and neighbors. Also among his friends are members at Palmdale United Methodist Church, where he was a committed member of the church for 10 years and devoted leader and member of the Mens Prayer Breakfast group. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at the church, 39055 N. 10th St. West, Palmdale, with the Rev. James Powell officiating.
