MYERSVILLE, Md. - Suzanne Ruth Metzner, 88, of Harmony Road, died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving and faithful daughter and caregivers.
Born on February 14, 1926, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Minnie Rosenwald.
Sue was the first Jewish student to be admitted to the p University of Pennsylvania's School of Nursing, where she attended and graduated, as a member of the United States Army Nursing Corp. She cherished the nursing profession and worked at various times throughout her life as a registered nurse, working with individuals such as former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. In her earlier years in Hagerstown she was employed by the Washington County Hospital and later in life, due to her love of the profession, returned to work at the Colton Villa Nursing Home. She was loved by her patients and respected by her colleagues.
She was a member of the B'nai Abraham Congregation of Hagerstown.
Sue was a prolific artist. Her works of art adorn many homes and professional offices throughout Washington County. She loved gardening and nature. She made sure that her herd of deer and flocks of turkey were well fed and could talk to wild animals like no other. She loved her cats and they loved her, keeping her company throughout her life, but especially in her latter years.
Of all of her joys, none compared, to her love of family. She married her one and only love of life, having met her husband, Sidney at age fourteen. They carried on a long distance love affair from 1945 to 1947 while Sid was overseas serving in the Army and married upon his return. All who knew Sue knew however that her entire being was devoted to her five children. They were her pride and joy. They were her life. The bond between her and her only daughter was unique and everlasting.
She was blessed with the ability to live out her bedridden years at home, in the care of some of the finest and kindest caregivers in this world.
In addition to her parents her brother Robert preceded her in death. Her loving husband of over fifty years, Sidney, also predeceased her.
She is survived by her devoted and caring daughter, Carol Ann Metzner of Myersville, Md; four sons, Dr. Stephen Elliott Metzner, and wife, Gail and Lewis Craig Metzner and wife, Sharon all of Hagerstown, Dr. Jeffrey Lee Metzner and wife, Linda of Denver Colorado, and Jack Eric Metzner and wife, Kim of Middletown, Md; her grandchildren, Holden Metzner, Samuel Metzner and Kenneth Cowher, all of Hagerstown, Jessica Metzner and Alexander Metzner, both of Middletown Md., and Dylan Metzner of Denver Colorado.
