Mr. Messerschmitt was the son of Christopher and Johanna Messerschmitt of Trenton, New Jerey. He was the public relations director of the State Department of Institutions and Agencies.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Katharine Kaiser in 1950 and his only child Lt. Richard Christopher Messerschmitt in 1951.

He was survived by his wife Gladys Barlow whom he married around 1954.
