Mrs. Jane Barstow, 82, widow of Carle Barstow who operated Hardware business in Massena for many years, died at 1:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 8,1975, in Massena Memorial Hospital where she had been admitted with a fractured
right hip. Mrs. Barstow was scheduled for surgery Monday morning. She had been a patient in the St. Regis Nursing Home when she accidentally fell or slipped and fractured her hip Sunday. The body will be at the Phillips Memorial Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. George Easter, rector, officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in the Pine Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Barstow had resided at the Sheraton Inn for several years and moved to the health related area of the nursing home Feb. 1, 1975 following cataract surgery at the A. Barton Hepburn Hospital.
She was born Feb. 1, 1893 in South Burlington, Vt., the daughter of Lincoln and Harriett Cox Merrihew Her father was a native of Chazy. He was a truck gardner and served as a justice of the peace in South Burlington. Mrs. Barstow was graduated from Burlington High. School and attended a business school there.
She and Carl R. Barstow were married June 16, 1913 by the Rev. George Y. Bliss in Burlington. Mr. Barstow's father had an interest in the Vermont Hardware Co.
Mr. and Mrs. Barstow moved to Ogdensburg where they resided for a few years and came to Massena in 1916. He purchased the Hyde Hardware Co. with the late Jerry Foster purchasing the plumbing business of the Hyde Co.
Mr. Barstow died in Apr., 1941 and the Hardware business was later operated by the eldest son, John.
Active in community and church functions, Mrs. Barstow was a member of the St. Monica's Guild of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Cretona Chapter 516, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are three sons; John Barstow, assistant manager of the Sayer Retail Hardware Co. Glens Falls; Roy, Potsdam, owner of Barstow's Furniture Store and a partner in the Chevrolet Automobile agency in Potsdam with his
brother, Robert, also of Potsdam; one daughter, Mrs. Howard Elizabeth Patricia Bensch, Monterey, Calif. Also surviving are nine grandchildren.
Predeceasing Mrs. Barstow were a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Laura) Duval, Dec. 1968; a brother, Robert Merrihew, a number of years ago; a sister, Mrs. Ada Johnson, Springfield, Mass., several years ago.
