ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Mrs. Agnes M. Butler, 86, of Cooperstown, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 15, 1999, at Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, Fla.
She was born on Oct. 4, 1912, on Staten Island, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Jennie (Thompson) Merrell.
She married Clyde W. Butler on Oct. 23, 1931, in Cooperstown. Mr. Butler died on Dec. 23, 1976.
After graduating from business school on Staten Island and being employed by AT&T in New York City, she moved upstate to attend Hartwick College. She was later employed by the Otsego County 4-H office and then the Otsego County Department of Social Services. For many years she served as a secretary at the Cooperstown Central School and later at the Clark Foundation Scholarship Office. Upon retirement, she was employed part time at the family business, The Butler Press, Inc.
Mrs. Butler was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, the Otsego-Hartwick Chapter 201, Order of the Eastern Star in Cooperstown, the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital Auxiliary, and at one time was an active member of the Cooperstown Fire Department Auxiliary.
Mrs. Butler is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Richard Olin of Venice, Fla., and Susan and John McCullough of Cazenovia; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard C. and Anita Butler of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Ruth M. Spencer (formerly of St. Petersburg, Fla.) who died in 1991.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor, and her nephew, the Rev. M. Lee Spencer, co-officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.
Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, from 3 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, when Mrs. Butler's family will be in attendance.
