Donna May Merrell Dexter, 82, passed away April 12, 2009, at Sterling Living Center. A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m.Friday, April 17, at the Peace
Lutheran Church, 1404 S.Ninth Ave., Sterling. Donna was born Oct. 29,1926 in Sterling to Carter (Pat) and Kathryn Merrell.She attended Sterling schools.
She married Raymond Dexter in June of 1952. Out of that marriage, three daughters were born. They spent many years living in Lola Creek, Mont., Merino, and Frisco. They then moved to Fountain where Donna owned and operated a dry cleaning and laundry business.
Raymond died on Dec. 24, 1973. Donna and the three children moved back to the Sterling area, living in Desert Village for a short time, then moving to Atwood in 1977 where she resided until entering the nursing home in December of 2007.
Donna was well known for her hard work and family commitment, independence and strong opinions. She spent many years helping care for her parents. She was a regular visitor to Sterling Living Center, visiting many friends and residents there and participating in activities before the moved there. Her hobbies were reading, gar dening and yard work, and visiting her many friends and family, but her true passion was visiting the Colorado Rocky Mountains, collecting pine cones, rocks, picnics, and climbing the mountains with her grandchildren.
Donna was preceded in passing by her parents Carter and Kathryn Merrell, sister Jean Atkins, and brother Robert Merrell.
She is survived by her daughters, Christie Britton and husband Jewell of Greeneville, Tenn., Nancy McCune and fiancÚ Ken Watkins of Grand Junction, and Verlia Dexter-Dutton and husband Steve of Lakewood; her sisters, Opal Burton and husband. Terry of Lancaster,Calif., June Lauer and hus band Pete of Sterling; and her brother, James Merrell and wife Bona of Atwood; grand children, Bryan Clark and wife Laura of Sterling, Cathi Herrera and husband Jesse of Johnstown, Erik Logan of Denver, Nathan Dexter of Lakewood, Lindsey McCune of Denver, Mykie Clark of Greeneville, Tenn.; step- grandson, Andrew Dutton Topper of Denver; great grandchildren, Alexia Herrera and Adrian Herrera, both of Johnstown, and Brayden Clark of Sterling; step- great- grandchildren, Alexis Sky Delgadillo and Gabriel Tedder; nephews and nieces, Nick Merrell, Pete Lauer Jr., Ann Mathies, Val Frank, Deb Egbert, Roberta Herrin, Becky Wolever, Charles Merrell, Robert Merrell Jr., Sandy. Atkins- Clark, Mark Atkins, Kelly Atkins, Mike Burton, Terry Burton, and numerous great- nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bernice Page and Helen Williams.
