Centurion, Floyd Clement Merchant, 100, of York, formerly of the Polk area, died on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at York General Hospital. Floyd was born on August 9, 1911, in Arborville Township, York County, to Raleigh E. and Laura K. (Recknor) Merchant.
Floyd received his education at District 89 School in Arborville Township and two years at Polk High School. He graduated from York High School and received his degree from York College. Floyd was united in marriage to Maxine G. Barr on February 5, 1936 at the Barr home in Lockridge Township.
Maxine died of leukemia on April 11, 1944. On November 28, 1946, Thanksgiving Day, Floyd and Katherine J. Keyes were married at Shiloh EUB Church northwest of York. To this union were born three children. Floyd farmed in the Arborville Township area and was involved in the farming operation until his death.
He earned his CDL in 1995, at the age of 84, so he could continue to drive his semi-truck and he renewed it in 1999. In July of 1977, they moved to York.
Floyd was a member of the Arbor Drive Community Church in York and served on the Board of Elders. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. Floyd was a member at Arborville Congregational Church near Polk and served on the Board of Deacons and he was also a former member of the Polk Baptist Church.
Floyd's close relationship with the Lord fueled his passion to share his faith with others. He traveled with the Christian Laymen's Crusade for a number of years, singing solos and in duets.
Floyd enjoyed leading Bible studies in homes and at the Central City Rest Home for several years. In his senior years, Floyd had a music ministry of singing at the York Truck Stop Chapel for Sunday morning services.
Floyd sang many times at the various rest homes in York and surrounding towns, giving half hour programs. Floyd and Katherine prayed daily for each member of their family.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathy of York; children, Myrna Jane and Alan J. Dinwiddie of Ft. Collins, Colo., Arnold Eugene and Jan Merchant of Littleton, Colo. and Alan Floyd and Tam Merchant of Polk; grandchildren, Ben and Amy Merchant, Josh and Kayla Merchant and Caleb and Melody Merchant all of Central City, Michael and Karen Dinwiddie, Cherilyn and Niall Stewart, Victor and Sarah Merchant, Michelle Fausto, Jesslyn and Christofer Hildred all of Colorado; step-grandchildren, Jenna and Brett Wilcox, Lindley and Brandon McCrary, Marissa and Chad Brady and Brianne Barkley; 17 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Louise Merchant of Stromsburg and a host of relatives and friends.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; grandson, Jeff Dinwiddie and infant granddaughter, Bethany Merchant; great-granddaughter, Brettania Fausto; and brother, Robert Merchant.
Interment was in the Arborville Cemetery, Polk County, NE.
