WAYNE, Neb. -- Robert A. Merchant, 87, of Wayne, Neb., entered into rest March 4, 2008, at Providence Medical Center.
A Christian Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, at First United Methodist Church, Wayne, Neb. Masonic Service will be performed by Wayne Lodge #120 A.F. & A.M. Interment with military rites will be held at Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wayne, Neb.
Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Hasemann-Schumacher Funeral Home of Wayne, with the family present from 5-7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Abu-Bekr Shrine Transportation Fund and Wayne Meals on Wheels.
Robert Auker Merchant was born April 18, 1920, at Wayne to Earl and Delpha (Auker) Merchant. He began working with his father at Merchant Oil Co. while in high school and college. He graduated from Wayne High School and attended Wayne Normal School then was employed by International Harvester as a salesman of dairy equipment. Bob served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942-1945 as Staff Sgt with the 90th Bomb Group in the South Pacific based in New Guinea. Bob married Pauline K. Kunde February 24, 1946, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton. Bob became manager of Merchant Oil Co. in 1948 and purchased the business from his father in 1961. Bob and Pauline were co-owners of Merchant Oil Company, retiring in 1987. He was an active life-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Wayne. Bob served on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Petroleum Marketers Association, serving as President in 1962, Past President of Wayne Chamber of Commerce, Wayne Industries, and was instrumental in forming the Wayne Rural Volunteer Fire Department. He served on the first Civil Service Commission, Library Board, United Way, and Charter Member of Wayne VFW Post #5291. Bob was devoted to the Masonic Life since 1947 and was awarded the Grand Masters Humanitarian Award in 2002.
Bob is survived by his daughters: Paulette (Randy) Cordes of York and Joanie (Mike) Jones of David City; 5 grandchildren: Rebecca Cordes (fianc , Brian Eiserloh), Michael (Chelsea) Cordes, Dr. Stephanie Jones, Grant Jones (fianc , Nicole Gee), and Greta Jones (fianc , Seth Shanahan); 3 sisters-in-law: Alice Zwemke of Wichita, KS and Kathleen (Maury) Ekeren of Yankton, SD and Darlene Kunde of Yankton, SD; brother-in-law, Edward Christensen of Freeman, SD; many loving devoted nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pauline in 2005; brother, Stan (Kay) Merchant.
