Abilene, Texas - Graveside services were conducted on Saturday, July 28, 2007, for Laura Louise Mercer Cheatham at Shiloh Cemetery in Comanche County. Mrs. Cheatham passed away on July 25 at Mesa Springs Healthcare Center in Abilene. Officiating at the service was her nephew, Rev. Brandon Mercer, Pastor of Cornerstone Church in Granbury.
Louise was born on August 17, 1919, in Comanche County, Texas, to Wade A. Mercer and Millie McCullough Mercer. She worked in the insurance industry and was a Past President and honorary lifetime member of the Insurance Women of Texas. Upon retirement, she volunteered her time and energy to many good causes; Hospice of the Big Country, Meals-on-Wheels, preparing tax returns for the elderly, and spent over 20 years as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Shiloh Cemetery Association. She was a member of Church Women United.
Louise was a longtime member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where she served as the church librarian. She was a faithful member of the Mizpah Class and was awarded a special recognition pin for her service and leadership in United Methodist Women. Louise spent many hours visiting the sick and infirm. In 2002, she was chosen to be the chairperson of the 50th Anniversary celebration at Aldersgate, a huge undertaking.
Louise was a good Christian, mother, and friend, and will be missed by all those who were touched by her life.
Survivors are: her daughter, Carole and son-in-law, Steve English; a granddaughter, Suzanne and husband, David Lester; three nephews, and Margaret Lewis, a longtime special friend to all the family.
Preceding Louise in death were her parents, three brothers, Walter, Claude and Alton Mercer and their wives, and a niece.
