RECOVER BODY OF SLIGO MAN-Glenn M. Mercer, 40, Missing since Saturday is Clarion River victim.
Clarion, March 20 -- the body of Glenn Myron Mercer, 40, of Sligo, R.D. 1, who had been missing from his home since Saturday afternoon, was recovered about 10 p.m. tonight from the Clarion river below the mouth of Mill Creek. The body was recovered at a point about 2,000 feet below the place Mercer had parked his automobile after driving to the river to fish. It is believed that he slipped down an embankment into about 10 feet of water and was unable to save himself. The search for Mercer's body was directed by William K. Mowry, Sr., chief of the Clarion fire department, who was assisted by District Attorney, W.P. Geary and Assistant Chief Edward Spindler. Mercer left his home at 4 p.m. Saturday to go fishing and was last seen about 5:30 when he stopped at the Mowry service station here for gasoline. At the time he asked William K. Mowry, Jr., to accompany him on the fishing expedition, but the Clarion man was unable to make the trip. When Chief Mowry heard that Mercer was missing, he remembered that the Sligo man had intended to go fishing and so the chief drove to the Clarion river at the mouth of Mill Creek where he found the missing man's automobile, fishing tackle and lunch. Help was summoned and volunteers started dragging the river. The body was placed in a motor-boat and taken downstream to the river bridge about a half-mile west of Clarion and then brought here. Dr. H.M. Wellman of St. Petersburg, announced that no inquest into the drowning will be held, and that he will issue a certificate of accidental death by drowning. Mercer, who was employed by the Owens-Illinois Glass company, married the former Lottie Henry, who with several children, survives.
