Before WWII these men were members of the 32nd Tank Company of the Red Arrow Division of the National Guard. President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the mobilization of the National Guard in November of 1940. The Janesville unit was blended with three other units to form The 192nd Tank Battalion. The Janesville men were in Company A. The men arrived in the Philippine Islands at the end of November 1941 and were based at Clark Field. The Japanese starting attacking the island on December 8, 1941. Later that month Captain Walter Write died from injuries he received from disabling a land mine. Sgt. Edward Trebs and Lt. Albert Bartz were ill and transported to a hospital in Australia through a deal with the Japanese. Corp. George McCarthy escaped into the hills and the rest of the men surrendered to the Japanese in April 1942. They were then forced to march as part of the Bataan Death March. The men were held as Prisoners of War until 1945. In all, 64 men from the Janesville area lost their lives during these three years.
