OBITUARY OF MRS. BURTON ASHCRAFT

Mary Ellen, oldest daughter of John G. and Deborah Melvin was born near Lexington,
Washington county, Iowa, Feb. 20, 1858, and died at her home west of Quenemo, February 20,
1941, at the age of 83 years, following a brief illness. With her parents she came to Kansas in 1879.
She was united in marriage with Burton Ashcraft, September 24, 1884. To this union eight
children were born, three preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband Burton Ashcraft and the following children: Mrs. Edna Wards and Mrs. Edith Doty of Quenemo; John G. Ashcraft of Salina, Kansas; Charles L. Ashcraft of Osage City, Kansas; Alva T. Ashcraft of Omak, Washington.
She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters: Charles L. Melvin and Joseph D
Melvin, Salina, Kansas; Mrs. Elizabeth Service, Ottawa, Kansas and Mrs. Elma Smith, Melvern,
Kansas.
These together with 17 grandchildren and three great grandchildren mourn her loss. She
united with the Methodist Church at an early age and her faith has never been shaken throughout
the years.
Her life was a sublime example of devotion to her family and friends. Interment in Oak Hill cemetery, Quenemo, Kansas. Rev. Nelson S. King of the Federated Church officiating. Lamb-Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers: A.C. Gray, Fay Beatty, G.K. Wilson, Dean Athens, Everett Fine and C. E. McFerren.
