Kathleen Melvin Atkinson, 84, formerly of Bladen County, North Carolina, died Monday, December 11, 2006, at Summit Square Retirement Community in Waynesboro, Virginia.
She was born August 30, 1922, in Eastover Township in Cumberland County, North Carolina, a daughter of Ralph Preston Melvin and Claudia Mae Melvin. She grew up at White Lake, North Carolina.
She graduated from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
She was of the Presbyterian faith. Mrs. Atkinson was a devoted wife and mother.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Capt. James A. Atkinson of Waynesboro; her daughters, Jean Atkinson Mitchell and her husband, William, of Annandale, Virginia, and Elizabeth A. Gibson and her husband, Mark W., of Sandy, Utah; and her grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Gibson and Robert R. Gibson.
A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2006, at the chapel of McDow Funeral Home by Pastor Dee Lohr. Interment will be private in the Atkinson Family Cemetery, Bladen County, North Carolina.
