Ethel Mary (Mellon) Anderson passed away peacefully on February 7, 2005, at the Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital in Monterey, CA at the age of 94.
Born in Ellensburg, Washington on March 17, 1910, she had lived on the Monterey Peninsula since 1965. At the tender age of five she lost her mother, Ethel (Baker) Mellon, Since her father, John Mellon, was a conductor on the Northern Pacific Railway and had to travel extensively, she, her brother and her sister were raised in the home of Mrs. Belle Le Page in Spokane, WA.
She met her husband of 69 years, Bernard A. Anderson, while both were working in the offices of the Department of Agriculture in Spokane. They were married there in 1931.
She was a devoted mother, who provided a marvelous home for her growing family as Bernard's assignments with the U.S. Forest Service took them to several Western states, and ultimately to Washington D.C. She and her husband moved to Rome, Italy, in 1957, where he had accepted a diplomatic position with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization upon retirement from the Forest Service. After eight wonderful and fulfilling years in Rome, where she studied history and art, they retired to Carmel, CA.
They lived in their own home at Fourth and Perry Newberry Way, until moving to The Park Lane in Monterey in 1988. During her time on the Monterey Peninsula she was active in numerous local organizations, including the League of Women Voters, Carmel Residents Association, Sierra Club, Monday Afternoon Club,MPC's Gentrain, and the Carmel Foundation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy, the former Mayor of Carmel who passed away in 2001. Her brother, James Mellon, and her older sisters, Kathleen Mellon and Elizabeth Mellon, all predeceased her.
She is survived by her three children, Kathleen (G. Gervaise) Davis of Monterey, CA, Larry B. (Ruth) Anderson of Columbus, OH; James M. (Beatrice) Anderson of Gaithersburg, MD; and by nine grandchildren: Virginia Davis and her partner, Kim Kelley, of Prunedale, CA; Cynthia Davis of Monterey, CA; Susan Davis of Woe, CA; Shauna Rowe of Monterey, CA; Gary Anderson of Oklahoma City, OK; Kevin Anderson of Hartford, CT; Alan Anderson of San Francisco, CA; Alexander Anderson of New Market, MD; and Christopher Anderson of Myrtle Beach, SC.
