News of the death of 1st Lt. Frank O. Melkush, Springfield, which occurred May 26 in England, has just been received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Melkush. Cause of his death was not disclosed in the army announcement. He had been overseas since early in May.

Members of his family are planning for a memorial service which will be held sometime next month in Southern View chapel at a time when his cousin, Sgt. S. Alfred Ehrig, will be home on leave.

Lt. Melkush was born in Springfield Nov. 8, 1919. He was graduated from Springfield High school in 1936 and from Brown's Business college in 1938. From 1938 until his enlistment in the army air corps Dec. 16, 1941, he was employed in the general offices of the C & IM railroad.

He was active in Boy Scout and YMCA work as a civilian. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He was assistant scoutmaster of the troop representing Abraham Lincoln council at the national jamboree in Washington, D. C., in 1937. He served several summers as a leader at the Boy Scout camp on Lake Springfield. He was a qualified Red Cross instructor in swimming, life saving and first aid.

Lt. Melkush was a representative DeMolay, a member of the Stephen A. Douglas chapter of the Order of DeMolay, Delta Kappa Chi fraternity and the Southern View Chapel.

He was a direct descendant of Col. Gideon Minor, who served in the American Revolution and Maj. Alfred A. North, who served in the Civil war.

He received his air corps training at Chanute, Kelly, Randolph and Moore Fields and Tallahassee, Fla. Part of his time at Moore Field was served as an instructor.

He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Helen Bucari and Mrs. Mary Louise Swigert, and one nephew, Alex Bucari.
