MADISON Dr. Carolyn McBryde Cardwell, 89, passed away Tuesday evening January 10, 2012, surrounded by her family.

An 11 a.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Madison United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dan Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery.

A Hoke County native, Dr. Cardwell was born October 2, 1922, the daughter of Calvin Foster and Mary Belle Clarke McBryde. She graduated from Raeford High School and received her B.A., M.A. and PhD degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Cardwell served over thirty-two years in the capacity of teacher, principal and administrator in the public schools. After her retirement from public education she operated Cardwell Realty for twenty years. She was a member of Madison United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for over twenty years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of forty nine years, Thomas Vaughn Cardwell; two infant children, Mary Vaughn and Mark Foster Cardwell; two sisters and one brother.

Dr. Cardwell is survived by four children, Carolyn M. Cardwell of Somerville, NJ, Thomas V. Cardwell, Jr. and wife Judy of Durham, Deborah C. Walker and husband Barry of Greensboro and Lynette M. Cardwell of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Ariel, Alexander, Lindsay and Bryan; five great grandchildren.

As one of the first female principals in the state, Dr. Cardwell's efforts contributed to the evolving leadership roles of women. Her belief that all children deserve an excellent education led to many reforms that affect us to this day.

Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and as a woman of many talents.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2012, at Ray Funeral Home and at other times at the family home. Online condolences may be sent to
