Charles Henry McNeal was born on August 5, 1858. He was the fifth of five children born to Abraham McNeal and Phoebe Beebe. His mother and his siblings had suffered from boughts of malaria. During the latter part of his mother's pregnancy with him, she had been weakened by the disease. A few hours after his birth, his mother passed away during the night. The newborn boy had been taken by Aunt Levina and Uncle Henry for caring. During the night his father Abraham was called to be with Charlie, but the child did not live much longer than his mother, passing in the night. His mother Phoebe was buried near Fremont, and a large crowd came to her funeral. After his death the grave was reopened, and Charlie was placed in the grave with his little coffin next to his mother.

The site of her burial is now covered by concrete and is within the Hormel Foods plant complex in Fremont. Charles is buried with his mother under the present location of the Hormel Plant.. There is a marker, a brass plate, that is attached to a steel beam in the ground along the side of the street, on South Platte Avenue where it curves to become Factory Street. It is about 500 feet west of the actual grave site.
