U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Orangeburg Collegiate Institute in 1907, he taught school in Perry, South Carolina (1907 to 1908). He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1912, earned a law degree at the same university in 1913, was admitted to the bar, and opened a private law practice in Charleston, Charleston. Additionally, he was the head baseball coach at Citadel Military College and played professional minor-league baseball with the South Atlantic League. Entering politics, he was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives (1917 to 1924). In 1925, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-ninth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until his death.
