At the time of his death he was one of the three oldest surviving graduates of the Citadel. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, the Philippine insurrection and World War I. He first went into the Army as an enlisted man in 1895. He was a small man, and liked to recall that for weeks he had to drink abnormal quantities of water and eat bananas wholesale to gain weight and then get a recommendation from his congressman in order to get into the Army.
