Alice Marie McLane Axelberg
Apr 5, 1957 ~ Mar 20, 2013

Alice M. McLane-Axelberg, 55, passed away at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at her home after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Alice was born on April 5, 1957 in South Bend to the late Paul and Alma (Schellinger) McLane. Her father-in-law, James Axelberg, also preceded her in death.

Alice was raised in South Bend and was a 1980 graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, earning a BA in English. After graduation, she worked at the Summit Club in South Bend, where she developed a deep appreciation for fine food and wine. In 1984, Alice embarked on a ten-year adventure in Galena, IL, where she worked as a writer/photographer for the Galena Gazette and eventually as the Sales and Marketing Manager for the Convention and Visitor's Bureau. After nearly a year of long-distance romance, Alice moved back to South Bend in 1995 and on September 21, 1996, she married John T. Axelberg, who survives.

Along with her husband, John, survivors include their daughter, Emily; sister, Patricia Starr of Beverly Hills, MI; brothers, Michael McLane of Carmel, IN and Don McLane of Gig Harbor, WA; mother-in-law, Lou Axelberg of South Bend; sister-in-law, Beth (Craig) McCoy of Ashburn, VA; nieces, Maggie and Rebecca Starr; nephews, Kevin and Aaron McLane; and her cousin, Kate (Doug) Freeman of Elizabeth, IL.

After returning to South Bend, Alice worked as a writer and photographer for The Tribune Business Weekly, and was employed by Project Future as Marketing Manager at the time of her daughter's birth. She was an active volunteer at Stanley Clark School while Emily attended. Prior to her first bout with breast cancer in 2004, Alice was an avid equestrienne and enjoyed riding her horse Kody in hunter-jumper events. When Emily began taking dance classes at Flint Dance Studio, Alice decided it was the perfect time to fulfill a childhood dream of learning to tap dance, which she pursued as long as she was physically able. She also enjoyed the study and practice of Yoga, and became certified to teach in 2011. Alice was committed to historic preservation, and at the time of her death was serving as a commissioner of the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at the Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 S. Twyckenham Drive, South Bend, IN. Rev. David Schrader, pastor, will officiate.

Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.
