Ethel Rose Alberta McKinley Johns, 85, of Vevay, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at The Waters of Dillsboro-Ross Manor in Dillsboro.
She was born June 2, 1924, in Batesville, the daughter of Alfred E. and Lillian Ann Ross McKinley. She was raised in Ohio County and attended Mount Carmel School. She and her husband lived on their family farm on Tapp's Ridge for 40 years before retiring and moving to Vevay in 1991. She was a private housekeeper for the Copeland family in Vevay, retiring after 12 years of service. She was a member of Fredonia Baptist Church, where she was Sunday school clerk for 25 years. She was also a member of the Tapp's Ridge Home Economics Club and the Red Hat Ladies Society at The Waters of Dillsboro-Ross Manor. She enjoyed gardening, writing poetry, cooking and housekeeping.
She is survived by two sons, David Wayne Johns of Flemingsburg, Ky., and Steven Allen Johns of Rising Sun; one daughter, Brenda Kay Rayles of Vevay; one sister, Marcella Mabel Henry of Dillsboro; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George D. Johns, whom she married Oct. 18, 1943, and who died May 16, 2004; two sons, George Robert Johns, who died May 2, 1962, and Michael Ray Johns, who died Dec. 23, 2007; her parents; four brothers, Edward, Everett, William and Arthur McKinley; two sisters, Myrtle McKinley and Cora McCabe; and one grandson.
The funeral was at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery.
