William was christen on 29 Aug 1925 at the Tilden United Presbyterian Church, Tliden, Randolph County, Illinois, where he was a lifelong member. William grew up in Randolph County, Illinois.

He enlisted in WWII in 1944 while a junior in high school. William served wih 5th Air Forece, 39th Troop Carrier Squadron in Japan.In 1945, he re-enlisted and served until 1947 when the war was over. He left the service as a Sargent.

On 1 May 1948 William married Dorothy Pearl Mulholland. William and Dorothy had one child: Sheila Rae McKinley.

William worked as a coal miner and was a member of United Mine Workers Local 1392.

William died in the Sparta Community Hospital at age 63. He was preceded in death by one sister.

William's obituary lists the following survivors: his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Sheila; three brothers, Roy McKinley of Coulterville, Dwight McKinley of Effingham, and Lee McKinley of Tennessee, and one sister, Marguerite Morrison of Granit City.

Funeral services were 8 Feb 1989 in the Tilden United Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Tilden Cemetery.
