Sam's obituary appears in the Sparta News Plaindealer, Sparta, Illinois, 17 Nov 1944 under the following headline: Sam McKinley, 69, Injured in Fall, Dies in Hospital.
Sam, the son of Robert McKinley and Sarah McKee, married Cora Margaret Edimiston on 18 Oct 1900 in Prosperity UP Church, Sadowa, Randolph County, Illinois. Sam and Cora had the following children: Florence Martha, Walter Roland, Gilbert Lester, and Bertha Loraine.
According to his obituary, Sam died at the Community Hospital in Sparta, about a month after he was injured in a fall from a disc at his farm home. Mr. McKinley had been a patient in the hospital for a month and three day. At first, doctors believed that his injuries were not critical but he failed to rally as expected and bronchial pneumonia was the cause of death. Sam was 69 at the time of his death.
Sam's obituary describes him as a prominent farmer of the Tilden community and at one time a director of the Sparta Fair Association.
The obituary lists the following survivors: his widow, Sarah; two daughters, Mrs. Loren Brown of near Baldwin, and Mrs. Cole of Chicago; two sons, Gilbert of Belleville, and Prof. Walter McKinley, superintendent of the Marissa schools, and three brothers, Lemuel R. of Belleville, Charles G. of Shelbyville, and James of Marissa.
Funeral services were held at the U. P. church in Tilden, the Burns Funeral Home of Coulterville in charge, with burial in the Tilden cemetery.
Note: According to his obituary, Sam was born near Tilden. However, other records indicate that he was born in Lakewood, Ohio. Based on the birth of siblings, it appears that the McKinley family spent about seven years living in Lakewood, which is the area where Robert McKinley's parents lived.
