FARMINGTON - Vertie L. Agren, 86, of New Portland, died late Saturday afternoon, July 31, 2010, at the Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. She was born on March 3, 1924, in New Portland, a daughter of Charles and Mabel (Rice) McKenney. She graduated from New Portland High School in 1942 and went on to attend two years of business school in Skowhegan. She then enlisted in the Navy and worked in Washington, D.C., doing clerical work, and was discharged in 1946.
On Sept. 21, 1947, she married Gustaf Agren in Kingfield. They made their home in New Portland where she worked in the offices of various local businesses until taking a position with the U.S. Postal Service and ultimately serving as New Portland's postmaster for 22 years.
She was a longtime member of the New Portland Community Church.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Gustaf of New Portland; two sons, Bruce Agren and his wife, Deborah, of New Portland and Robert Agren and his wife, Diane, of Madison; four grandchildren, Michael Agren of Boston, Shawn Agren of Portland, Stephanie Hemingway and her husband, Derek, of Kingfield and Daniel Agren and his wife, Sandy, of Strong; three great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Brandon and Alex; and a sister-in-law, Muriel Handrahan of New Portland.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Zadie Hargreaves, William McKenney, June Whitcomb, David McKenney and Viola Turner.
Graveside services will be held at the East New Portland Cemetery. (Morning Sentinel 8/3/2010)
