Nettie June Akin, 67, of Hallsville died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at her
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at Memorial Funeral Home with
elder Wallace Johnson officiating. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery in
Ashland. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the funeral
Mrs. Akin was born Jan. 20, 1930, in Columbia to Leon Wellington and D. Pearl
She married Leno Norris Akin on Oct. 19, 1946, in Columbia, and he preceded
her in death.
She was a member of Mount Zion Church in Hallsville, a past member of Mother
Singers and Home Builders Association auxiliary. She was a member of the
bowling league of Columbia and was an elder in the Northern Cherokee Nation.
She had worked for the Boone County Sheriff's Department and was the first
female bailiff for the City of Columbia. She had also been a secretary for
Memorial Park Cemetery and worked in real estate.
Survivors include two sons, David Norris Akin and Danny Lee Akin, both of
Columbia; a daughter, Deidre June Akin Thomas of Columbia; two sisters, Wanda
Gale McKee Wright of Independence and Sharon Lee McKee Coffelt of Jamestown;
seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son, and a brother.
