Second-youngest son of Granville McKee and Catherine Wehrley, Joseph was born in Darke County, Ohio. By 1900, his parents had moved the family to back to his father's home county of Preble, Ohio and shortly afterwards, Joseph went to Henry County, Indiana where on 01 Dec 1906 he married Hallie Jones at New Castle.

Their marriage registration states he was then living at Sexton, Indiana and Hallie was at Lewisville with her family. (In the marriage record Joseph also states he was born at Eldorado, Indiana but this is incorrect--although the McKee family has long ties to the town of Eldorado in Ohio, birth records show he was born in Butler Township, Darke County.)

Joseph and Hallie's only child, Byron, was born in Indiana in 1907, after which the family returned to live in Jefferson Township, Preble County, Ohio where they farmed on "Paul & McKee Road."

Indiana, however, had an allure for Joseph and by 1920 he moved back to Wayne County--first farming, then eventually settling at Richmond where for a time he worked for a lumber company.
