William D. McIntire was born May 25, 1834, in Fleming County, Kentucky, to parents Nicholas McIntire (1802-1859), and Eliza D. Sims (1802-1892), both born in Kentucky.

William was the third child in a family of eight children. His brothers and sisters were:
James McIntire (1830-),
Elizabeth Sims McIntire-Adams (1833-1913),
Amanda McIntire (1837-1907-),
Mary W. McIntire-Adams (1840-1920),
Melvina McIntire-Wyatt (1844-1909),
Alvira Jane McIntire-Bailey (1847-1910),
and Andrew L. McIntire (1850-1920).

In December 1878, William married Sarah Ellen Bailey (1850-1890), born in West Virginia. William and Sarah settled in Jefferson County, Montana, where William was a miner. They had five known children:
William McIntire (1880-1962),
Elsie McIntire (1882-),
Elizabeth "Jed" McIntire-Crowley (1886-1957),
Pearl McIntire-Oldhaber (1889-1970), and
Dr. Howard Dixon McIntire (who went by the spelling McIntyre) (1890-1957), all born in Montana.

William is buried with his wife and two daughters in Boulder Cemetery.
