CUMBERLAND — Frances Josephine Hoffman, 88, formerly of Cumberland and residing at Avalon Manor Nursing Home in Hagerstown, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2004.

Born Nov. 27, 1915, in East Saint Louis, Ill. She was the daughter of the late William John McGraw and Anna Wilhelmina (Dashney) McGraw. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin C. Hoffman, Jan. 11, 1995; two brothers, William J. McGraw and Donald T. McGraw; and two sisters, Genevive Giles and Elizabeth Travers. Mrs. Hoffman was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A homemaker, Mrs. Hoffman was a member of Saint Luke's Lutheran Church. She is survived by her son, James E. Hoffman and his wife Nancy, Fair Haven, N.J.; her daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hess and her husband John, Fredericksburg, Va.; five grandchildren, Kyle W. Hoffman, San Diego, Calif., Kevin E. Hoffman and his wife Kathleen, Ocean Township, N.J., John E. Hess III, and his wife Tracey, Cherry Hill, N.J., Ursula Sauter and her husband Marc, Chesapeake, Va., and James W. Hess, Philadelphia, Pa.; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., (formerly Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A.), 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, ( www.Adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com) on Monday, May 31, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Stephen Yelovich officiating.

Interment will be at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
