MACOMB, Ill. - Darlyne Elizabeth (Qualley) McGrath, a loving wife and mother and wonderful grandmother, was born July 20, 1925, and died Dec. 29, 2007. She is survived by four children, Julie (Sonnie) Meredith of Macomb, Tim McGrath of Bradenton, Florida, Lori Randall of Dumont, Colorado, and Mike (Renee) McGrath of Lillington, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Skyler Meredith, Clyde Meredith, and Beau Meredith; three great-grandchildren; and by two brothers, Clayton (Bonnie) Qualley and Sidney (Marilyn) Qualley. Her family was always the focus of her life and her greatest joy.
A funeral service will be held in Macomb in the Wesley Church chapel at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2008. On Saturday at 2 p.m. there will be a funeral service at Davenport Memorial Park cemetery chapel, followed by a dinner at 5 p.m. at the Steeplegate Inn in Davenport.
One of five children, she was raised on farms during the Great Depression in North Dakota and Minnesota, graduating from high school in Luverne, Minnesota.
She married James B. McGrath in 1947. She worked for American Airlines before she was married. She was a Girl Scout Leader and a TTT member, and delivered "meals on wheels." She enjoyed music and was a member of the Luverne high school band. She loved playing games, traveling, nature, and camping.
The newlyweds started their life together in Midlothian, Illinois, and then moved to Des Moines so James B. could complete law school. She received her P.H.T. "put hubby through certificate" from Drake University in 1952. They moved to Milford, Iowa, and lived in northwest Iowa area for five years before settling in Davenport in 1956.
When James B. passed away in 1973, Darlyne resumed a defense department career in the purchasing department at the Rock Island Arsenal while raising the children and putting them through college. She retired in 1990 in the family home in Davenport, before moving to Macomb in 1998.
She is at peace now, may God rest her soul and comfort ours as well.
