William Milner McGinty, retired insurance executive, died after a lengthy illness on Friday, October 31, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 88.
He was born in Ft. Collins, Colo., on December 25, 1919, the son of the late Prof. Rupert A McGinty and Letitia Cross McGinty. He grew up in Clemson, graduated from Clemson College, where he was appointed Brigade Chaplain, and earned a master's degree from the University of Virginia. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946, including 39 months in the European Theatre. He continued serving in the Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Mr. McGinty was associated with James H. Woodside Co. until 1960, followed by 25 years with The Furman Co. and Marsh & McLennan Co.
He was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, the John M. Holmes Bible Class, the Kiwanis Club of Greenville and The Poinsett Club. He participated in many productions of the Greenville Little Theatre, earning an Oscar.
For 26 years, he enjoyed a second home on Hilton Head Island, where he was a former member of Sea Pines Club and St. Andrew-by-the-Sea United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary Francis Raysor McGinty; three daughters, Dr. Carol M. Rawlinson of Atlanta, Harriet M. Mitchell and her husband, Mike Mitchell, of Naples, Fla., and Marian M. Carpenter and her husband, Fred Carpenter, of Greenville; four grandsons, Patrick Rawlinson of Mauldin, Brian and Emily Rawlinson of Spartanburg, Tom and Leah Carpenter of Washington, D.C., and Neal Carpenter of Nashville, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard A. McGinty of Hilton Head Island; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas F. McGinty; and his sister, Margaret M. Davis.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the loving caregivers who gave unselfishly of their time and compassion.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2008, in the sanctuary of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, conducted by Reverend Jerry Temple and Reverend Grover Putnam. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church parlor.
