Elsie Ines Slough McFarland was born January 21, 1920, in Alamogordo, NM. She entered heaven's glory on May 3 2010, in Lone Tree, CO.
She was the only child of Kelly and Maggie May Slough. The young family moved from Kelly's homestead at Cloudcroft, NM, to Maggies May's place at Norton, NM, in 1921. Elsie began school at Norton and graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1936. While in school, she received awards for excellence in Chemistry and Acting. She attended Eastern NM University then transferred to NM State to graduate with a Teaching degree in Math, Chemistry, and English in 1939. She taught at Endee and coached the volleyball team to a state championship. She also taught at Pleasant Hill and Clovis.
In Clovis, she met another young teacher named Charlene McFarland. They soon became friends and roommates. Helping in the war effort during WWII, Elsie spent her summers working for Lockheed in California as Rosie the Riveter. When WWII was over, Charlene's brother, Shine, came home and met his sister's roommate and married her in January of 1947. They farmed at Friona, TX, for a few years then moving to the Norton Ranch in 1950 with two children, Sarah and Kelly. Mary joined the family a couple of years later. Elsie and Shine lived at Norton until moving into Tucumcari in their retirement years.
Surviving Elsie are her children, Kelly and wife, Yvette of Tucumcari, Sarah Wilson and husband, Mike of San Angelo, TX, and Mary Madera and husband, Adrian of Castle Rock, CO; her beloved grandchildren, Keldon and Suzette McFarland, Marcus, Scott and Russell Wilson and Sonja and Rachonne Madera as well as her great granddaughter, Elizabeth Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years who she survived by 9 weeks.
Services celebrating her life will be Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM in the First Baptist Church with C.L. Bowe officiating. Interment will take place in the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery.
