Suggested edit: He was born in Tattnall County in Georgia in 1811. His parents were William McElvy and Barbara Reeves. His father was a Primitive Baptist preacher. His family moved to Southwest Georgia in about 1823. Francis had 10 siblings. He was married to Lenora Studsill.
John served in a Georgia cavalry unit as a Captain in 1836 during the 2nd Creek War.
His wife, child, and all of his slaves died of measles in 1837 leaving him alone on his plantation in Decatur County, Georgia. He sold his plantation in November of that year. and then moved to east Alabama.

Francis was also known as Frank. He was married second to Amanda Melinda Rogers in Muscogee County, Georgia in 1838. He settled in Russell County, Alabama and raised a family. He was elected to serve as a Justice of the Peace in 1842 in Russell County. Frank and Amanda lived and raised their family in Russell County. They are recorded in 1850 and in 1860 in Russell County. War came to the south and to Russell County the next year. Frank's son, Charlton enlisted in the 2nd Alabama Reserves that later became the 63rd Infantry. He was sent to Mobile. Charlton became ill and died in hospital in November of 1864. Frank had another son, Willilam Augustus that enlisted in the 20th Georgia Infantry and was in the Benning Brigade. Frank and Malinda had 13 children.
