Lorine M. Kienberger, 91, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, in Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Kienberger was born in St. Charles, Mo., on July 3, 1909, the daughter of Claude and Minnie McElhiney. She grew up in the St. Louis area and attended Warrensburg Teachers College. She taught school in the St. Louis area for almost a decade and always considered herself a teacher and friend to young people, her family said.

She met her husband, Charles Kienberger, while they were both principals in neighboring schools. They married in 1941. Her husband was a chemist who came to Oak Ridge to work with the Manhattan Project during World War II. Mrs. Kienberger joined him in 1944 and the couple had lived here since that time. Mr. Kienberger died six months ago.

Mrs. Kienberger and her husband were active charter members of Faith Lutheran Church of Oak Ridge. They served the congregation in many capacities. She taught Sunday school, served with the Lutheran women's Missionary League and helped her husband in a number of other roles at the church.

She was a longtime member of the Oak Ridge Woman's Club. Mrs. Kienberger had worked as a substitute teacher for the Daniel Arthur Rehabilitation Center and was a poll watcher at election time.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlene and her husband, Dr. George E. Smith; her granddaughters, Lauryl Smith and Kristin Smith; and by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, at Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Evers officiating.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Faith Lutheran Church, 1300 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge; or to Keystone Elder Day Center, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Weatherford Mortuary is handling arrangements.
