James Starrett McDonald was the son of Robert N. and Mary Ann (Starrett) McDonald. (His death certificate lists his date of birth as Oct. 13, 1842 - information given by son, John.)
He enlisted three times during the Civil War. The first time, he served for 6 months in Co. K, 129th Reg. OVI. The second time, he served for 100 days in Co. A, 169the Reg. ONG. And the third time, he served until the end of the war in Co. G, 25th Reg. OVI. During his last term of service, all of his bunk mates were shot but one - and that one died of disease - making James the lone survivor.
