Hugh Milton McDonald, Sr., was born 1791 in Pennsylvania, son of Alexander & Margaret McDonald. Family was in Nicholas County, Kentucky, when the War of 1812, was needing volunteers, Hugh entered the service as a substitute for David Caldwell.
On February 29, 1816, in Nicholas County, Kentucky, Hugh married Grizzella Riley, daughter of John and Mary Strahan Riley, to this union twelve known children were born, Mary R., Nancy M., John R., Elizabeth Jane, James Alexander, Salema Caroline, Sarah Ann, Samuel R., Hugh Milton, Jr., Margaret Isabelle, Grizzella, and Harriet McDonald.
Hugh and Grizzella, started their married life in Nicholas County, Kentucky, between the years 1816-1828, where Hugh was a farmer. In 1830 Hugh and family were living in Decatur County, Indiana, they were still there in 1832, when their 9th child was born. In the spring of 1834, Hugh had moved the family to Clinton Township, Boone County, Indiana, he had 80 acres from a land grant.
Hugh donated the land for the Hopewell South Untied Presbyterian Church and Cemetery.
