NORFOLK - Virginia Hoeding Neale, 87, passed away Sept. 17, 2007, in a local hospital. Born in Northhampton County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Mamie Andrews McDaniels and Eugene McDaniels. She was the widow of William H. Brown and Thomas F. Neale Jr.
Mrs. Neale grew up in Norfolk, graduated from Maury High School in 1938, where she was the first female to receive an athletic letter as the drum majorette. During World War II she served for two years in the Women's Army Corps in the Intelligence Department. She was a 60-year member of First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk where she was an elder, president of the Women of the Church, a Circle Leader, member of the Meals on Wheels Committee and was chairperson of the Church Wedding Guild. She was also a member of the Christian Woman's Club, Norfolk Junior Woman's Club, Elizabeth River Woman's Club and attended First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach. She was a former member of the Navy League, The Ballentine Home Board of Directors, St. Mary's Infant Home Auxiliary Board and their Soup Kitchen.
She is survived by her three daughters, Carol Brown Guinn, Deborah Neale Boling and Susan Neale Stevens; three sons, Eugene L. Brown, Stewart B. Neale and Harvey W. Neale; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Laurance Hoeding and a brother, Eugene L. Hoeding.
Her family will receive friends at a visitation from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover Ave., Norfolk. A funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
