POWERS FOUND SHOT TO DEATH AT RURAL RESIDENCE

The second apparent murder has been reported in Carnegie in six months.

Janice Powers, 49, of Carnegie was found dead of apparent gunshot wounds Sunday afternoon at a rural residence.

Carnegie Police Chief Randall Hileman said Powers body was found by her mother Thelma Little at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the south side of a home one mile south and one mile east of Carnegie.

"Powers mother came by the police station and said that something was wrong with her daughter," said Hileman.

"Officer Gail Ballou went with Little to the residence and dispatched for an ambulance," he said.

"Officer Clifford Smith was on the ambulance crew and immediately secured the area as a crime scene," sad the chief.

He said the home is located approximately 200 feet from the roadway and was taped off prior to the arrival of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation officials and county law enforcement deputies.

"The incident is under investigation and nothing can be talked about at this time, no details can be given of what clues the OSBI may have," said Hileman.

He said the amount and extent of Powers wounds is not being released pending the investigation. He said that any information on a weapon or motive is also being kept confidential by OSBI investigators.

OSBI agents and Caddo County Sheriff's Investigators were continuing their investigation in Carnegie at press time Tuesday morning.

Investigators said that Powers was not living at the residence at the time of her death.

"The people around here need to wake up and address this issue," said the chief who is alarmed at the amount of violent crimes being reported in the Carnegie area.
Funeral services for Powers were set for Wednesday, June 26, 1996 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Carnegie with Dr. Richard Tinker, officiating.
