MARY LUTECIA AVITT
Mary Lutecia McCullough, daughter of John F. and Sarah Ann McCullough, was born Feb. 3, 1878, near Newbern in Marion county, Iowa, and passed away, after a serious illness, at the Enslow nursing home, on Aug. 18, 1956, at the age of 78 years, six months and 15 days.
On March 8, 1893, she moved with her parents to Lucas county, which has since been her home except for three years in Ottumwa and three years in Des Moines.
At the age of 16 she was converted and baptized in the Christian church in Russell in services conducted by the Rev. P. H. Green. Later, she changed her membership to the Evangelical United Brethren church in Chariton.
On March 9, 1898, she was united in marriage to Clarence A. Avitt and to this union three children were born, Ruth, Harold, and a son who died in infancy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarence, and two sisters.
She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter, Ruth Hopkin of Chariton, and a son, Harold Avitt of Moline, Ill. Five grandchildren, Evelyn and Margaret Hopkin of Chariton, Wayne Hopkin of the U. S. Navy, Great Lakes, Ill., Fred and Danny Avitt of Moline, Ill., one great-granddaughter, Linda Sue Avitt; one brother, Chester McCullough of Des Moines, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. A. E. Beals, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at the Miley Chapel. Burial was in the Oxford cemetery.
