Well known Prohibition supporter, traveling Pennsylvania and other states.
Educated at Monmouth College in Illinois near where his family lived in Aledo, Illinois.
In a letter to one of his nephews (quoted in a letter to the Genealogical Society of Southwest Pennsylvania) he said:
Our folks migrated to Pennsylvania from County Down or Antrim, am not sure which, in 1751. They settled in Mercersburg, PA in the Cumberland Valley where they lived until after the Revolutionary War. Some members of the family remained in that part of the state, and I have met some of their descendants.... Father's grandfather, with my grandfather, his son, whose name was William, emigrated to Washington County, PA and took up land on a government patent not far from Canonsburg, Washington CO. about 25 miles from Pittsburgh. When father was about 25 (1828), his father and his family, consisting of three sons, father, whose name was James, William, and Robert and four daughters moved to Cambridge, Ohio. Father married when he was about 40 years of age and settled in Morgan County, not far from Beverly. Brother Will, your father, was born on the farm in Morgan County in October 1842. Brother Alex, sister Jennie, Mrs. Carnahan, and I were born at the same place and then father moved to Washington County, Ohio and sister Mattie, Mrs. P. J. Reed was born there. In 1860 father moved to Rock Island, IL, and in 1866 to Mercer County.
(The move to Guernsey County was actually around 1836-JAM.)
