"An invalid woman, left alone temporarily, died in a fire that swept her home in the Blue Creek subdivision, east of Benton Harbor, early this morning.

Mrs. Helen Hayden, 46, wife of Frank Hayden, died in a chair in the living room of their home, where her husband had placed her before leaving for work less than an hour earlier.

Benton Township Fire Chief Harrison Versaw said the fire started around a hot air duct close behind the overstuffed chair in which Mrs. Hayden had been seated.

The husband had left for work at the Twin City Plating Corp. plant at 6:30 a.m. He told the Coroner Harding Dey that he had banked the furnace before leaving for work.

A daughter of the couple, Mrs. Burl Smith, 19, of 2112 Crawford street, Benton Harbor, was to come to the home later in the morning to be with her mother.

An unidentified boy walking past the home noticed smoke issuing from the house and return to his home to have his mother call the fire department, fireman said. The alarm was received at 7:15 a.m.

The 4 room home at 440 Blue Ridge road was badly gutted on the interior. A dog and cat, family pets died inside the home too.

Mrs. Hayden was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward McCrone of Benton Harbor and had been an invalid for the past 10 years.

Mrs. Hayden was born October 10th, 1905 in Benton Harbor and was married to Frank Hayden in South Bend in 1928.

Besides her husband, daughter and parents, she is survived by 2 brothers, John McCrone and Edward McCrone Jr., and a sister Mrs. Catherine Ainsworth, all of Benton Harbor."
