During their marriage they lived in Freeborn County, Minnesota and in Butler & Floyd Counties in Iowa. They spent the last 25 years of their married life living in Rockford, Floyd County, Iowa. After Orin's death on April 9, 1922, Ellen moved to Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa where she lived with her son George until her death in 1943 at age 98.
She was the mother of five sons: William L. (Rosabel Crum), Thomas Henry (Ilda Rooks), Charles Edward, James Artemas (Rosina Haag), George Everette (Anna Thom) and three daughters: Emeline Alzora (Ernest Daniels), Olive Mae (David Lehman) and Cora Belle (William Metz). She was preceded in death by five of her children.
Ellen had four half sisters by her father's first wife Susan Whalen: Phebe (Harvey Pettit), Lucy (Andrew Hibbard), Adeline (? Bird), Alemeda (James Eagleston), and she had two sisters and two brothers by her mother Ruth Shaw: Sarah (Robert Parker), Emily (Arnold Walchli), Asha (Catherine) and Joseph (Clara).
