Akwesi was employed by Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina at the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek, South Carolina. He was a lover of jazz and oldies music, and sang in his church choir and locally. As a member of his high school marching band, he played the drums, cymbals and timpani.
