GREENSBORO Aileen Short McCraw, of Greensboro, passed away on March 10, 2012.

Aileen was born on December 3, 1919, in Pinnacle, NC, to Samuel Reuben Short and Dixie Culler Short. Shortly thereafter the family moved to the Sumner area where she resided most of her life. She was a graduate of Sumner High School, followed by business training. She retired after 39 years with the Federal Government, the last 25 years of which were with the Appeals Office of Internal Revenue.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mrs. McCraw is survived by her husband of 66 years, Wayne McCraw; twin sons and their wives: Jerry and Letha McCraw of Greensboro, Terry and Sammie McCraw of Wake Forest; a daughter, Helen Jones, and her husband Steve of Lakeland, Florida; six grandchildren: Callie Yount (husband Johnny), Jacob and Samuel McCraw, Matthew, Lisa and Andy Jones (wife Kristi); along with four great grandchildren: Wyatt and Weston Yount; Sydney McCraw, and Kaleigh Jones. Also her sister, Mabel Short Hodgin Williams, and sister-in-law Mildred Steele Short, and special nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents, brother Roger Short, and sister Mildred Short Brady.

Mrs. McCraw had a zest for life, optimistic outlook on life, and believed in living each day to the fullest. Aileen loved people and enjoyed being with her family and many cherished friends. The examples she taught us through the way she lived her life will never be forgotten. She enjoyed writing and receiving notes and through them she shared her words of love, friendship and encouragement. She enjoyed reading, travel and working with flowers.

Aileen was a dedicated and lifelong member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. She served on numerous committees and taught Sunday School; was a member and served as past president of Rehobeth's United Methodist Women, and also served in the district. She and her husband prepared the church bulletins each week for over 25 years. She attended the Greensboro Christian Women's Club where she served as a table hostess for many years. Aileen was a Charter member of the Sumner Garden Club where she served as past president four terms, and was a lifelong member of the Garden Clubs of North Carolina. Mrs. McCraw was a life member of Chapter 211, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, where she served nine years as its President.
