Alphonsus McCormick was born in August 1836 in Greenwood, New York to James and Margaret McCormick two years after they had arrived from Ireland.

In about 1867-70 when he was 31-34 years old, Alphonsus married Mary Joann Hamilton, who had been born in Canada in 1848-50. They had five children between 1871 and 1881, but at some point lost one (John F.). They were married for about 25 years.

Mary died of unknown causes shortly before her 45th birthday in the spring of 1893 in Rexville or Greenwood, New York. The loss of Mary may have been the final deciding factor in spurring Alphonsus to join his brother Robert in relocating both families to Montana.

Alphonsus came to Montana in 1893 at the age of 57. He and Robert were the only McCormick siblings who had remained in New York. The two brothers probably brought both of their families to Montana together in 1893, to rejoin their other successful land-owning brothers who had been there from the 1860's on.

Alphonsus took up homesteading on the land overlooking Monument Creek in South Hills of Billings, at edge of an Indian reservation. Monument Trail is also called McCormick's Trail.

In the 1880 New York census, an extended McCormick family is living either with each other or next door to each other in two or more homes. Seemingly unmarried 40 year old James J. McCormick, younger brother to Alphonsus, is listed as a hotel keeper, and the head of the family. In the same abode is his 45 year old divorced sister Mary (McKinley) listed as a milliner, and her two daughters, Louise 18 and Theresa 16, both listed with a Wisconsin birthplace. Their unknown McKinley father's birthplace is listed as Ireland, and their mother Mary's as New York, which is an error, since Mary was definitely born in Ireland. Also present is the 83 year old patriarch of the family James McCormick listed as a farmer, and a young male and female servant, both born in America to Irish parents. Next door is 45 year old Alphonsus McCormick, and his 30 year old wife Mary J., and children Mary 8, John F. 6, James 4, and Alice A. age 1, as well as an 18 year old Irish-born female servant, plus a 28 year old American-born blacksmith of Irish parentage. Also nearby is 31 year old Theodore McCormick, a cheesemaker, his wife Mary, 24, and their 1 year old baby Mary, and brother-in-law John Moran age 26. It is unknown how this Theodore fits in with the family of James and Margaret McCormick, as they had no son by that name. A Mary Moran later marries the widowed Robert McCormick, brother of James and Alphonsus. Also living with Theodore and Mary is a 13 year old female servant from Ireland listed as working in a factory, who appears to have the same last name as Alphonsus' 18 year old female servant.

Alphonsus died at age 77 in August 1913 in Montana. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Billings, Montana - note that his older sister Mary McCormick McKinley and his brother John McCormick are buried side by side in the same cemetery, Mary a divorcee and John unmarried.

Alphonsus had at least 5 grandchildren, the children of his daughters Mary and Alice.

His headstone says that he was born in Greenwood, New York - the name of his hometown was obviously important to him and his family. Greenwood is a town only about 5 miles south of the town of Rexville, New York, where many of his brothers were documented as having been born (family records, U.S. censuses).
