Thelma J. Brooks, 88, of Friendswood, formerly of College Station, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at her daughter's home in Friendswood, where she has lived for the past six years.
Graveside Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at College Station Cemetery with the Reverend David Elton officiating.
Thelma was born to Maude and Carl McCollum on October 8, 1920, in Gore, Ga.
She moved with her family to College Station in 1965, when her husband, Lt. Col. Rayford L. Brooks, became the Vice-Commandant of the Corp of Cadets at Texas A&M.
She was a homemaker and for fifteen years, worked as a secretary at First Baptist Church in Bryan.
Thelma was a longtime member of A&M Presbyterian Church, now Covenant Presbyterian Church in College Station.
She was very dedicated to the Presbyterian faith and served as a Deacon and Elder for many years at A&M Presbyterian Church.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Marilyn Marks, and her beloved husband of 53 years, Rayford L. Brooks, Lt. Col., U.S. Army (Retired) on February 3, 2000.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Dianne Brooks, of Cypress, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and James Hanchey, of Friendswood; six grandchildren, Heather Brooks, Matthew Hanchey, Stephen Hanchey and wife, Carrie, Amanda Hanchey, Sarah Marks, and Jon Marks; twin sister, Elma Johnston, of Summerville, Ga. and sister, Louise McCollum, of Gore, Ga.
