A lifelong resident of Gardnerville, he was born on Nov. 21, 1917, in Fredricksburg, California, to Alexander and Mary Scossa McCollum.
He served in the U.S. Army for six years during World War II as a Tech Sgt. with the 488th Engineer Light Pontoon Co. in the European combat area.
Mr. McCollum worked as a general contractor since 1959, building custom homes in the Lake Tahoe area.
He was a member of Carson Valley Methodist Church and of Carson Valley Lodge #33 F&AM for 50 years. He also had served on the Town of Gardnerville Water Board.
Mr. McCollum is survived by his wife of 55 years, Myra "Mike" Springmeyer McCollum, of Gardnerville; daughters: Missy (Dan) Cartmell, of Richland, WA, and Gaye (Tom) Nickles, of Reno; and grandchildren: Allison, Rachel and Tommy.
At Mr. McCollum's request, a private family graveside service will be officiated by the Masonic Lodge at the Genoa Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Douglas County Paramedics or Sheriff's Office.
